The first week of this school year has been great!
I was nervous to begin teaching a new subject in US History but so far it seems to be going well. I am still feeling my way on how to best present the information. Economics is awesome as always. I love teaching economics because it is a chance to show kids what they can do to take control of their lives. I'm sure many just participate for the grade and then forget the lesson but my hope is that some take it to heart and use the information. We talk about really managing your money so your money does not manage you. I pull a lot of ideas and resources from Dave Ramsey, Rachel Cruz, and the Minimalists. The kids seem to respond well to them. AP Human Geography is rolling right along. I have one class with 11 kids and the other with 23 kids so it is a little lopsided with discussion and personalities. Both groups seem bright and nice. I have high hopes for this group and am excited to see how the year will progress. I also coach the girls golf team and we got some new equipment this week that will allow us to practice at the school. We also (hopefully) picked up a few new players. We have had quite the time recruiting. Onward and upward! -Kyle

Whew!
The first day is always a whirlwind of new. New faces and new names abound along with some new procedures. I am terrible at remembering names, no matter how hard that I try, so I always warn the kids that it will take me awhile to get it right. I had AP Human Geography to start and then US History and Economics before my last period planning. I love last period planning because it is a great way to get caught up and is handy with coaching the girls golf team. Day one went pretty smooth (other than mid day broken hole punch) so I am hoping day two goes just as well. Day one reinforced the idea that kids value authenticity and that it is okay to be wrong or not great at everything in from of students. Kids understand everyone is human and it makes you infinitely more relatable if you show them that side. The past week has been productive and promising.
Our school has been in the throes of organizing and preparing for our students. I moved rooms this year so it has been a rebuilding time. I had to clean out years and years of old materials before I could add my style. It took awhile but it is starting to feel like home. Having a window for the first time in a couple of years also helps! Besides the new room, I have a new class to prep, US History. Not really big in to US History but I'll give it the old college try. I have also been preparing for my first season as head girls golf coach. We have some sweet kids and I hope they enjoy the sport. So new year, new classroom, new subject, new sport and a lot of other newness to adjust to and thrive. This year is shaping up to be awesome! |
