Student teaching is something that most teachers experience. It can be a great experience or a miserable one. The experience that you have is dependent on what you do and who you are paired with; those applies to the student teacher and the coaching teacher.
Something that can be useful would be for the administrative team to be invited in to watch a lesson by the student teacher. The coaching teacher should help make sure that the lesson and class selected will reflect the best on the student teaching and that the admin invited will be supportive of new teachers (they all should be but we know that some people are more receptive than others). Extending this invite to admin can help in multiple ways. If the student teacher wants a job at the school or district they have a chance to show off and this can help their chances of getting a job. This is a confident move and can leave quite the impression. And even if they want to work elsewhere, they can have an extra set of eyes on their teaching that can provide valuable feedback. The administrator may even be able to give interview tips and talking points that the coaching teacher may not know.

Hi!
It has been over a year since I posted. Things got crazy with a new baby and then the holidays, and then the COVID-19 pandemic. I also started working on my second Master's degree in educational administration and this blog just slipped away down the to-do list. By this point, I am now only a few classes short of my degree and I recently passed the Praxis test. I am hoping to make the jump into administration soon. I have been participating in my district's leadership program and that has been nice to see others around the district working towards the same thing as me. I also have a student teacher and working with him has been fun and has reminded me that I should get back on here and try to help others. My goal is to improve the educational experience for students and sharing things that I have learned here will broaden my impact. My superintendent always says to "know thy impact." Here is where I try to expand it. |
